Buy Less. Choose Well. Love It Longer.

There is a common misconception that creating a beautiful home means buying everything at once. We don't believe that.

The most memorable homes aren't finished in a weekend. They evolve over time, one thoughtful decision at a time. They tell the story of the people who live there, collecting pieces that are loved, lived with and chosen for a reason.

Recently, a client asked if I could recommend a less expensive rug for her primary bedroom. I certainly could have. But after considering the room and the sanctuary she wanted to create, I told her I thought it would compromise the overall design.

That doesn't mean every rug needs to be the finest available. There are wonderful opportunities to be practical in spaces like family rooms or basements. But every home has a few moments that deserve to be exceptional. In this case, the rug was one of them.

Instead of compromising, I suggested she purchase fewer pieces now to get the right rug.

That conversation reminded me of something we say often at Gild & Co.: buy less, choose well, love it longer.

It's a philosophy that guides every decision we make, from the antiques we source to the upholstery we build, the lighting we display and the rugs we recommend. We aren't interested in filling homes. We're interested in helping create homes that become richer and more personal with every passing year.

This week we've unpacked a beautiful collection of new pieces from John Derian. Bench made using traditional upholstery techniques and upholstered in luxurious natural fabrics, they're exactly the kind of pieces we believe are worth collecting over time.

If you're nearby, we'd love to welcome you into the showroom to experience them in person.

Warmly,

Bonnie

Teddy Sofa Bench

The Teddy Sofa Bench is one of those quietly brilliant pieces that designers reach for time and again. With its exaggerated English roll arms and long, tailored silhouette, it brings character without demanding much space. More bench than sofa, Teddy is perfect at the foot of a bed, in a welcoming foyer, or anywhere you need an elegant place to pause, put on your shoes, or create a beautiful layered vignette. It's proof that the most useful furniture is often the most understated. Online here.

Hedge Chair

The Hedge Chair is one of those rare chairs that invites you to stay a little longer. Sink into its feather-filled seat and back, and you'll understand why it's become one of our favourites. Its slightly smaller scale makes it wonderfully comfortable for many people—especially those who find oversized lounge chairs overwhelming—while the generous depth still offers plenty of room to curl up with a book or spend a quiet afternoon. Upholstered in luxurious linen velvet, it's as beautiful to live with as it is to sit in. Online here.

Cove Sofa

The Cove Sofa proves that comfort doesn't have to come in an oversized package. With its elegant tuxedo silhouette, tailored tight back and generous bench cushion, it offers the perfect balance of structure and softness. Deep enough to stretch out with a book yet compact enough for smaller living spaces, the Cove is one of those rare sofas that feels larger than its footprint. It's an enduring design that suits both classic and contemporary homes. Online here.

Thorn Tail Wing Chair

Every so often a piece arrives that makes us stop in our tracks. The Thorn Tail Wing Chair is one of them. Inspired by an 1870 American original, its proportions are simply exceptional—the graceful wings, generous height and beautifully balanced silhouette capture everything we love about antique wingbacks, yet feel perfectly suited to today's homes. Upholstered in a simple natural linen, it's the sort of chair that will look as elegant twenty years from now as it does today. Some furniture follows trends. Others quietly become classics. Dromedary Settee

The Dromedary Settee is one of those extraordinary designs that feels impossible to date. Inspired by antique camel-back furniture, John Derian turned the silhouette on its head, creating graceful twin peaks with a gentle dip between them. The result is a piece that feels both historic and surprisingly modern. We especially love it upholstered in a simple natural linen, allowing its sculptural form to take centre stage. Whether placed in a foyer, bedroom or intimate sitting room, it's the kind of furniture that quietly becomes the most talked-about piece in the home. Online here.
