How to Decorate for Fall (Without Decorating for Fall)

The Art of Layering

How to decorate for fall without looking like you've decorated for fall.

As the seasons change, so do our moods and what we crave from our homes. Suddenly, we're spending more time indoors, turning on the lamps earlier and looking for a little more warmth and comfort.

But creating that feeling doesn't require a seasonal makeover. Sometimes it's as simple as adding one beautiful cushion that feels just right for the season. A small change can make a surprisingly big difference.

Lighting is another favourite trick of mine. I love a large or tall lamp for the way it brings a forgotten corner to life, making the entire room feel warmer, larger and more inviting. At this time of year, I often leave the lamps on throughout the day. There's something about walking into a beautifully lit room that immediately makes you want to stay.

The secret, I think, is in the layers. Not necessarily more things, but the right combination of textures, lighting and objects that make a room feel collected, comfortable and personal.

Five Ways to Bring Warmth Into Your Home

1. Make it personal.
Artwork, objects collected on your travels or something with sentimental meaning. These are the things that make your home yours and give a room its personality.

2. Think beyond overhead lighting.
Layer task lighting with softer ambient light. Table lamps, floor lamps and beautifully illuminated corners create atmosphere and make a room feel welcoming, especially as the days grow shorter.

3. Ground the room with a beautiful rug.
Hardwood and stone floors are lovely, but a generously sized area rug brings softness, warmth and a sense of cohesion. A rug should help anchor the furniture, not float beneath it.

4. Layer in natural textiles.
A wonderful wool or mohair throw, a beautifully textured linen cushion or a touch of velvet can completely change how a room feels. Mix textures rather than matching everything perfectly.

5. Add something old.
I believe every room benefits from something vintage or antique. A piece with history brings character, depth and a little soul to a space. It's often the unexpected element that makes everything else feel more interesting.

Beautiful Layers, Made to Last

Our latest collection of Italian cushions and throws celebrates the beauty of natural fibres and traditional craftsmanship. The weaving techniques embrace the subtle irregularities of handmade textiles, creating extraordinary depth, texture and warmth.

These are pieces that really need to be seen and touched to be fully appreciated.

We've gathered some of our favourite new cushions, throws, rugs and lighting to inspire you as we settle into the season ahead.
