Which, frankly, is rare.
In an industry where the fundamentals — sofas, chairs, rugs — don’t change all that often, true innovation is uncommon. “New” doesn’t always mean better. (I’m looking at you, machine-washable rugs. Large area rugs should not be machine washable — they need weight to sit properly and ground a space.)
But cordless lighting? This is different.
It’s not just a new product — it’s a new way of thinking about how a room is lit.
Lighting, Without Limits
For decades, lighting design has been dictated by one thing:
Where is the outlet?
Cordless lamps quietly remove that constraint.
Suddenly, light can exist exactly where you want it — not where it has to be.
- A small, sculptural lamp tucked into a bookcase
- A warm glow layered onto a kitchen island
- A soft pool of light on a coffee table
- A dining table lit beautifully — without a cord in sight
We’ve been especially drawn to pieces that feel as considered as any traditional fixture — antique-inspired bases, tapered shades, and quietly elegant silhouettes that don’t read as “portable,” just beautiful.
In my own home, our cordless lamp moves constantly — from the foyer, to the dining table, to the kitchen island — wherever we need a bit of atmosphere.
(Which does make me wonder… why do I still only have one?)
Why This Shift Is Happening Now
Several things have aligned to make cordless lighting not just viable — but essential:
- No visible cords across tables or running along floors
- Freedom of placement on shelves, bookcases, and counters
- Layered lighting without the need for electrical work
- Improved rechargeable LED technology with longer battery life
- Indoor–outdoor flexibility, ideal for patios and entertaining
- A more relaxed, European approach to lighting — less overhead, more atmosphere
We’re also seeing clients use them in ways that simply weren’t possible before — adding a pair to a console where no wiring exists, placing one on a stack of books for height, or using them as a temporary solution that quickly becomes permanent.

Behind the scenes at Gild & Co.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been working closely with Megan Baker Interiors on something we’ve been quietly building behind the scenes.
It’s rooted in something we see every day in the store. Clients who know what they like but want clarity before they commit. A way to bridge that space between inspiration and decision.
We’re not quite ready to share all the details yet, but we will be opening the doors for a first look very soon. More to come.
