How Many Cushions Does My Sofa Need?

How Many Cushions Does My Sofa Need?

The answer is that there is no right answer. It depends on the size of your sofa and, more importantly, your personal style. Some people love the simplicity of a single long lumbar cushion, while others enjoy a generously layered sofa.

To make things a little easier, we've broken it down into three approaches: Relaxed, Collected, and Maximalist. If you're looking for a starting point, our guide below outlines the cushion combinations we most commonly recommend based on sofa size.

Consider it a starting point, not a rulebook.

Love Seats Under 72"

The Endless Nights love seat below is styled with a relaxed cushion approach. A similar look can be achieved with either two small square cushions or a single long lumbar. When opting for fewer cushions, choose pieces with enough scale, texture, or pattern to make an impact and hold their own within the space.

A collected approach could be two small square and one small lumbar.

For the maximalist try two large square or two small square, one small square and one lumbar. The Cove Sofa below only has two cushions but they are large squares so lots of great impact.

Standard Sofa 73-84"

The Endless Nights sofa below is styled with a maximalist cushion arrangement: two large square cushions and two small squares. It creates an inviting, sink-right-in feeling that's perfect for serious lounging. You may need to rearrange a cushion or two to get comfortable, and yes, one occasionally ends up on the floor, but for many people, that's a small price to pay for this level of comfort.

A classic approach for a standard-size sofa might include two large square cushions paired with a lumbar or small square cushion. This combination feels balanced, timeless, and works well in most spaces.

A relaxed approach for a standard-size sofa might include two large square cushions or one large square paired with one small square. I particularly like styling them together in the same corner, which creates an effortless, collected look while leaving plenty of room to sit comfortably.

Large Sofas / Chaise 86-108"

Large sofas can hold a surprising number of cushions, making them especially fun for those who love mixing patterns, textures, and layers.

For a relaxed look, I recommend choosing cushions with enough scale and impact to stand on their own. A relaxed arrangement, like in the photo below, might include one large square, one small square, and one lumbar cushion, or simply two large square cushions. The goal is to keep the sofa feeling inviting and styled without overwhelming the seating space.

Sectional Sofas

Not surprisingly, sectional sofas can accommodate even more cushions. Often with three corners to style, they offer plenty of opportunities to layer texture, colour, and pattern.

For a relaxed look, we recommend two to three large square cushions—one in each corner. Easy, simple, and timeless. As always, when using fewer cushions, choose designs with enough impact through colour, texture, pattern, or a combination of all three.

For a classic look on a three-corner sectional, try three large square cushions, three small square cushions, and one to two lumbar cushions. This creates a balanced, collected look without feeling overdone.

For the maximalist, embrace the layers: three large square cushions, four small square cushions, two large lumbar cushions, and two small lumbar cushions. Generous, comfortable, and perfect for those who believe there is no such thing as too many cushions.

Large Sectional Sofas

Large sectional sofas need a lot of cushions. Seriously. If you have a true sectional with three full corners, we recommend styling each corner generously to help the scale feel intentional and inviting.

For a classic look, try three large square cushions, four small square cushions (with two in the middle corner), two large lumbar cushions, and one small lumbar. This creates a layered, balanced arrangement that still feels polished.

For my maximalist friends, a large sectional can easily accommodate three large square cushions, seven small square cushions (with three in the middle corner), three large lumbar cushions, and two small lumbar cushions.

It sounds excessive, but it's true—that's 15 cushions! On a large sectional, however, the scale works beautifully and creates an incredibly comfortable, sink-right-in feeling.
