How Many Pillows Do I Need on My Sofa? A Designer’s Guide

This is a fluffy question and the answer will depend on personal preferences and the size/style of your sofa. However, here's a quick reference to answer the question: How many cushions does my sofa need?

Love seats and smaller sofas under 75" long:
1-2 toss cushions

Regular size sofas, 76-89" long:
2-4 toss cushions

Large sofas, over 90" long:
3-5 toss cushions

Large sectional sofas:
5-7 toss cushions

Other tips:
  • Remove any free cushions that come with a sofa in the same upholstery fabric as the sofa. Just do it. Move them along. Re-purpose or donate.
  • With an odd number of cushions on a sofa, have two matching and one different. The two matching can be in any pattern or shape.
  • Keep in mind all design "rules" should and can be broken. What's important is to stand back and look at the arrangement; do you like it? Leave the room and walk in again. Let your eye settle. Or take a photo. Photos will tell you what is missing or "wrong" with a space.
  • When you are lacking in sofa space or don't want so many cushions on a sofa or chair, add a luxurious throw blanket for texture/pattern.

n Vancouver homes—where living rooms often need to balance comfort, function, and a clean aesthetic—the right number of pillows can make a significant difference. Too few can feel unfinished, while too many can overwhelm smaller spaces, especially in condos and apartments.

As a general guideline, designers tend to recommend three to five pillows for most sofas, depending on size and depth.

  • Three pillows works well for smaller sofas or a more minimal look
  • Five pillows creates a layered, designer-style arrangement
  • Larger sectionals can handle more, but restraint is key

In spaces like Kitsilano condos, West End apartments, or North Vancouver homes, a thoughtful pillow arrangement helps create a sense of ease without adding visual clutter. Linen and neutral-toned cushions—like those found in our collection—work especially well with the natural light and relaxed palette typical of West Coast interiors.

To complete the look, consider layering in complementary textures and lighting:

A well-styled sofa isn’t about adding more—it’s about choosing the right balance of scale, texture, and number to create a space that feels both intentional and inviting.
